I reported regularly on the refugee crisis facing Turkiye and Europe from 2015-2017, including at a time when one million refugees crossed the Aegean and East Mediterranean to mainland Europe in just 12 months.
I've witnessed the sheer numbers of people trying to make it across the sea, and how coastguards and security forces were being overwhelmed in many different countries by people fleeing the Syrian Civil War. I was also regularly based on the Syria-Turkiye border during this time, reporting on other issues relating to the several million Syrian refugees living in Turkiye.

This was a real eye-opening report we filmed in 2015 after getting permission to spent the night shadowing the Turkish Coastguard.
It was truly shocking seeing how many people were trying to cross the Aegean Sea in just one night - and how difficult it is to deal with them when people are crowded into one boat.
